“But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
The first half hour of ‘Amazing Love’ takes place at a campsite where a youth pastor and his wife take a group of 5 teenagers on a retreat. During this first part of the movie, the acting is not very good and the dialogue is cheesy. The teens are somewhere between annoying and endearing. But the movie is well worth enduring this seemingly innocuous section of the story. The setup to the point of the movie is that there is a girl who comes along on the retreat against her will. She is rebellious and disliked by the other teens. The youth pastor does a bible study describing the account of Hosea and his unconditional love he had for his wife Gomer, insinuating that we too should love the unlovable.
The majority of the rest of ‘Amazing Love’ is set in Israel at the time of Hosea (around 700 B.C.). The scenery is beautiful since it was filmed on location in Israel. The acting was great and the characters really drew you in. It felt like you were there experiencing how Hosea felt.
I absolutely love this depiction of Hosea and the unconditional love he has for his wife Gomer, just as God has an unconditional love for His people.
God sent Hosea (an old testament prophet) to the Northern Kingdom of Israel to give His people who were worshipping Pagan gods a chance to repent and return to the true God. Hosea was faithful in preaching repentance even when they weren’t responding.
The parallel between Hosea’s love for Gomer and God’s love for his people is clearly portrayed. God told Hosea to marry Gomer even though she was a prostitute. Only the agape love of God could allow him to love her now matter what. In the same way, God loves us even when we are unfaithful. Just as Gomer would rather have been with men who can buy her nice things, The Israelites chose the life of prosperity and sin.
The two most powerful scenes are:
Hosea, alone and desperate, cries out to God, realizing he can’t do this without God giving him the grace.
After the man Gomer was with put her away, she was put up on the market for sale. No one wanted her. Hosea steps up and buys her back for a high price.
“We were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men” – 1 Corinthians 7:23
Best quote of the movie
“You love us because your love is not dependent on us.”
God doesn’t love us because of anything we do or because we deserve it. We could never earn God’s love. Thank God, in His mercy, there is nothing we can do to deserve God’s love and there’s nothing we can do to make Him love us any less!!
The message that God has sent Hosea to proclaim is not lost in this portrayal. Hosea makes it clear to all the citizens of the northern kingdom that God is warning them to return to Him or there is judgement to come.
I would highly recommend this movie as it emphasizes the unconditional love God has for His people in a beautiful portrayal of the story of Hosea!!
