Mornings

We all strive to be a "Proverbs 31 woman". We want to be that woman described in Proverbs 31:10-31 who does it all and is perfect in character.  Verse 15  says, "She gets up while it is still night", which makes sense; if she wants to accomplish all that is described here, she would have to get up pretty early. The picture here is for her to start her day before any else in the house gets up.  I never...

Gaining an eternal perspective

1)  Luke 10:20  "Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven. 2) 2 Corinthians 4:17  "For this light, momentary affliction is preparing for us and eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison." 3)  Romans 8:18  "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us."   Luke 10:20      When we...

Should we make New Year’s resolutions?

As the beginning of a new year arrives, most people take the opportunity to make resolutions, which is a good thing, but I have seen that for the most part, resolutions get broken and we get discouraged.  Instead, I am purposing, starting today, to be more disciplined in the areas of bible reading, memorizing, and studying God's word, eating, and exercising.  Notice, I said more disciplined. I am not limiting myself to something specific like, "I will read four chapters...

Meditating on God’s Word

If you're having a crazy, busy, day and are really struggling to sit down quietly with the Lord today, I have a solution:  Take just one scripture verse and meditate on it throughout the day. One of my favorite verses that I would highly recommend memorizing is Psalm 16:5.  It says "O LORD, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot".  There are thousands of verses that are so powerful and so rich in...

Solar eclipse

God reveals Himself through nature (called natural revelation or general revelation). Millions of people were in awe of the rare phenomenon of the solar eclipse.  Let's be careful never to worship the creation over the Creator. Psalm 8:1 says "O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens". We can meditate on this truth forever! It is truly amazing to think about the billions of stars and galaxies He spoke...

Turn your eyes upon Jesus

As we see the truth in this beautiful hymn, as we look to Jesus, nothing in this world is as bright. We need to take a little time each day to turn all our thoughts toward Jesus.  We all know this, BUT HOW??  What does it mean to turn our eyes upon Jesus? GRAB a few minutes of time when there are no distractions.  Some examples would be: while in the shower, while driving (without kids in the car), last thing...

Amazing love

We can take just a line from a great hymn or a line of scripture and meditate on it.  To dwell on the fact that Jesus, the King of Kings, died for me on that cross, took on all my sins and paid for them Himself is mind boggling. I am so unworthy and so undeserving of His forgiveness.  To be chosen by Him, forgiven, loved unconditionally, am called His child, and will live with Him forever is unfathomable. Enough said.

A waste of time

Do you feel like you spend half your life in places waiting to be called?  In my twenty-six years of raising five children, including two with serious heart defects requiring seven open heart surgeries, and one with special needs, I have spent countless hours in waiting areas.  Whether it be in hospitals, doctor's offices, dance studio waiting rooms, Department of Motor Vehicle offices, or college financial aid offices, I have had my share of seemingly "wasted time" with not much to...

Psalms and Proverbs

Is it a struggle to read the bible consistently?  It is so important to read the bible every day.  Psalm 119:105 says "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." It is what should direct every aspect of our lives.  It seems like so many times, when we try to grab a piece of undisturbed time to spend in God's word, the distractions come - the phone rings, the dog has to go out,...

First Things First

First things First Psalm 63:1 says "O God, my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You; In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water." We are in desperate need of the Lord every minute of every day.  Before our feet hit the floor, our very first thoughts as we wake up ought to be to acknowledge Him.  We need to thank the Lord every morning for giving us a...
