Meditating on God’s Word

If you’re having a crazy, busy, day and are really struggling to sit down quietly with the Lord today, I have a solution:  Take just one scripture verse and meditate on it throughout the day.

One of my favorite verses that I would highly recommend memorizing is Psalm 16:5.  It says “O LORD, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot”.  There are thousands of verses that are so powerful and so rich in meaning.  Sometimes meditating on just one verse, in this case just two lines, can be as beneficial to us spiritually as studying a large portion of scripture.

Let’s break it down into simple steps:

  1.  Write the verse down on a card or piece of paper that you can carry around with you throughout the day.
  2.  Memorize the verse. There are a few different methods for memorizing scripture, but since this is just one verse, you should be able to memorize it just by reading it over and over throughout the day.
  3.  Meditate on the verse.  Read it slowly, emphasizing each word individually.
  4.  Pray and ask the Lord to show you what it means.  When you get a chance, check a commentary for the meaning.  Think about what the verse means to you and how you can apply it to your life.

Psalm 16:5 has so much meaning to me personally and has literally changed my life.  It has helped me to view my trials and circumstances from a godly perspective.  God has chosen us to be His heirs. Right there is an amazing revelation that we can meditate on for hours.  He is our portion.  He has ordained that He, Himself is the portion (or lot) of our lives. Then an incredible promise that we can hold on to!! He maintains that lot!! He ordains everything that happens in our lives and then gives the grace to live it out!

I pray this was an encouragement!! To God be the glory!!!
